Long Meadow School

Long Meadow Schoolchildren support Fairtrade

For the last two years Long Meadow School have been learning about and promoting Fairtrade with a special focus during Fairtrade Fortnight - when they have run a Fairtrade shop and cafe, thus raising awareness within the school community as well as supporting the producers.

During the Fortnight they have held special assemblies - GEMK and Revd Pauline Barnes have been very supportive. This year's assembly was linked with Easter Eggs as we were so close to Easter.

This year also each year-group chose one Fairtrade product or producer country to focus on for those two weeks and linked it up with other curriculum subjects - FT logos were designed in ICT, FT bags were made in Design and Technology, chocolate and bananas were linked to literacy/numeracy/geography etc. Displays of Fairtrade material and children's work were mounted. The pupils are always so enthusiastic about Fairtrade and its promotion.

Each year,Years 6/7 have written to supermarkets requesting more Fairtrade products. And they are educating the parents as well.

In the staff room they also use Fairtrade tea and coffee.

St Mary's, Wavendon

St Mary's, Wavendon had been serving fairtrade coffee and tea after their services for some time and have recently officially signed up as a Fairtrade Church when a member offered to be a Tradecraft representative. Members have already ordered crafts and food from the catalogue and Fairbreak biscuits have been popular after services.

Plans are being made for a Fairtrade event on August 31st after which it is hoped to have goods regularly available. The representative is looking for a cheap mouse-proof filing cabinet in which to store consumables at the church!

West End United Church, Wolverton

West End United Church,Wolverton is a joint Methodist/United Reformed Church. They like to offer hospitality at all times, to those who worship with them or attend their events and activities: and tea and coffee always seem an indispensable part of that! As part of their commitment to justice and equality for all God's children, throughout God's world,"we took the decision to use only fairly-traded goods. It's a small but important way of expressing and living out our hope for a better, more just, world."
