Fairtrade Awareness soars in Milton Keynes

Over one in six shoppers in Milton Keynes now recognise and understand the Fairtrade Mark, a rise of almost 30% since last year. Almost half of shoppers regularly buy one or more Fairtrade products, according to a survey carried out by MK Global Centre. [access survey (pdf, 102K) here]

This was one of many records broken by Milton Keynes Fairtrade Forum in 2006. Record-breaking levels of activity around fair and ethical trade, achieved in part by bringing a growing number of local businesses and community organisations on board, have resulted in the highest recorded level of public recognition and understanding of Fairtrade in Milton Keynes. The highlights of the year were:

Growing numbers of retailers and caterers are stocking Fairtrade in Milton Keynes

More workplaces are serving Fairtrade tea & coffee to staff and customers (33% rise) due to an imaginative Fairtrade catering discount scheme launched with Sust! shop.

The number of Fairtrade schools doubled over the last year, helping towards an overall rise of 28% in the number of community organisations signed up as Fairtrade users and supporters

An unprecedented amount of media coverage of fair and ethical trade was achieved

A four page Fairtrade supplement was delivered to 90,000 households across the city.

Traffic to the Fairtrade Forum website (www.mkfairtrade.org.uk) has trebled over the year.

Consumers are increasingly informed about Fairtrade and concerned about the conditions of workers and farmers on company supply chains.

A public meeting, hosted by MK Chamber of Commerce and aimed at the business community brought new private sector recruits to the cause of fair & ethical trade.

As a result, public awareness and understanding of Fairtrade soared over the year. 62% of Milton Keynes consumers now recognise and understand the Fairtrade Mark; concern over conditions of workers making unlabelled goods is also rising. Similarly, MK-based companies are increasingly communicating publicly how they ensure the welfare of workers and farmers in their supply chains, which means they are starting to compete over ethics in addition to other commercial drivers (e.g. price and quality).
